Causes and
Symptoms of H. pylori Infection,
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most
common bacterial infections in humans, causing acute and chronic
gastritis, non-ulcer dyspepsia, and gastric and duodenal ulcer
formation. Many people infected with H. pylori never develop
health problems; others develop gastritis or ulcers. In these
instances, the most common symptoms are stomach pain, heartburn,
or bleeding. If left undiagnosed and untreated, the infection
may cause more serious problems, possibly even gastric cancer.
When duodenal ulcers are treated with antacids or medication
such as Tagament, Pepcid or Zantac, they usually return when the
medication is stopped. Acid-reducing treatments provide
temporary relief but usually do not cure the ulcers. The
potential for curing ulcers may be increased by killing
the H. pylori bacteria with antibiotic treatment.
H. pylori Disease Prevalence,
H. pylori is found worldwide. Epidemiologists believe more
than 50% of the population in the world is infected with H.
pylori. In developing countries and in lower socioeconomic
classes, there is a higher prevalence of infection, often
approaching 70-90%. It is believed that an increased
transmission of
the infection occurs in these disadvantaged socioeconomic groups
because of crowding or poor hygiene.
H. pylori infection has been shown to correlate with age,
ethnic background, family size, and socioeconomic class. In the
United States, the incidence of infection may increase 1-2%
annually. Eighty to 100% of individuals with signs and symptoms
of other gastrointestinal conditions such as duodenal ulcers are
reported to be positive for H. pylori infection.

One-Step
H. pylori Tests
By
coupling lateral flow technology to the serological testing for
H. pylori, two convenient One-Step point-of-care diagnostic
tests are now available. They qualitatively detect the presence
of H. pylori antibodies in whole blood, serum or plasma
specimens and provide results within 10 minutes. They are
reliable and accurate, and dont require any additional
equipment, expertise or complicated training.
Benefits of H.
pylori One Step Test,
1. Much simpler and quicker test format add specimen to the
test device and then read results.
2. High sensitivity and specificity
3. Quick, point-of-care diagnostic test
4. Results in 10 minutes- Aids the physician in making a
treatment decision during the same visit
5. Fast and easy, no biopsy or histology expertise required
6. No additional equipment or operator training required
7. Helps reduce risk of H. pylori complications and the spread
of infection
8. Long shelf life and room temperature storage of entire kit
9. Cost-effective alternative to traditional test methods
